Minsk

Belarusian History and Culture. Commemorative coin "Minsk". Minsk is the largest Belarusian city. It was first mentioned in the records of the year 1067. Built as an outpost of the Polotsk lands on their southern frontiers, the city on more than one occasion during its centuries–old history hindered the advance of invaders. During more than 900 years the city's appearance often changed due to inexorable time, wars and fire. Today Minsk is a political, economic, and cultural center, capital of the Republic of Belarus and of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Minskovites give a lovingly treatment to the architectural legacy. Old buildings are being renovated and continue to serve people. The city's wide and light avenues and streets, spacious squares, diversified and well–proportioned architectural ensembles, magnificent green colors of squares and parks delight the eye.
