This Commemorative coin dedicated to General-Lieutenant Alexander Lebed who commanded from 1992 to 1995 the 14th Guard Combined- Arms Army holding the Order of the Red Banner of the USSR Armed Forces (Russian Federation), stationed in Transnistria. He made a fundamental contribution to the elimination of the armed conflict in the region. As part of the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Bendery tragedy in June 12, 2012, a monument to the General-Lieutenant in Bendery was opened, in memory of his invaluable role in establishing peace in Transnistria.
Alexander Ivanovich Lebed (Russian: Алекса́ндр Ива́нович Ле́бедь; April 20, 1950, Novocherkassk – April 28, 2002, Abakan) was a Russian lieutenant-general and politician. He placed third in the 1996 Russian presidential election, with 14.5% of the vote nationwide. He later served as Russia's Secretary of the Security Council and as governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia's second largest region. He served four years in the latter position, until his death, following a Mi-8 helicopter crash.
