Beijing Olympic games

Georgia became part of the international Olympic movement since 1952, as one of the former USSR republics coming out in the competitions within the unified team of the Soviet Union. During 1952-1988 Georgian athletes took part in all the Olympic Games except the Olympics in 1984. Total number of athletes was 131 who won 28 gold 23 silver and 34 bronze medals. Among these athletes are three-time champion in athletics Victor Saneev (triple jump) and twice champion in freestyle wrestling Levan Tediashvili. 36 athletes ranked IV-VIII. In general during 1952-2004 total 185 athletes competed at the Olympic Games from Georgia winning 33 gold, 25 silver and 47 bronze medals.

Georgian National Olympic Committee (GNOC) was established in October 6, 1989. It was the first case within the post-soviet system. In 1993 Georgian NOC received the IOC recognition. Georgia was actively involved in the international Olympic movement since its establishment taking part in all the organized summer and winter Olympic Games. Since the date of its establishment GNOC paid significant attention to the activities and co-operation with the Olympians. In 1999 was founded "Olympic Champions Club", which had positive impact on the Olympians' solidarity and solution of the number of social issues

The composition of the design is the mixture of the old Hellenistic Olympic games and modern Olympic movements.

Georgia 2008 Beijing Olympic games
Obverse: 
A motif of couture lines of Olympic flames symbolizing the Olympic movement together with the old graphic image of two runners is featured in the center. The inscription "საქართველო", arranged in a semi-circle, is above the central motif. A medium size coat of arms of Georgia, with the denomination numeral 20 and wording "ლარი" inscribed beneath, are placed in the upper left part of the coin. The Emblem of the Georgian National Olympic committee is placed in the middle right part of the coin. The slogan of Olympic Games in Latin "Citius, Altius, Fortius" arranged in semi-circle, is placed beneath the central motif.
Reverse: 
The reverse of the coin features the Olympic flame itself and the collages of the new unique Olympic stadium in Beijing. The Name of the host City in Georgian language "პეკინი" is placed above the central motif. The year of issue 2008 is inscribed beneath the central motif.
