VYTAUTAS’ COINS FEATURING A LION AND THE KNOT SYMBOL AS WELL AS THE INSCRIPTION PEČAT (CIRCA 1392–1393)
Eduardas Remecas

Depicting a lion and the knot symbol on the obverse of his first coins, Vytautas, like Jogaila, could possibly wish to demonstrate his power within the entire GDL and his claims to all Russian lands, even those subordinate to the Golden Horde. Such great ambitions of Vytautas may have been resisted by the actual ruler of the GDL, Jogaila. He may have discontinued the striking of these coins, as this contradicted to Vytautas’ position. Part of the coins already struck (the heaviest) may have been restruck into coins reflecting the actual position of Vytautas – those bearing Vytautas’ personal symbol, a spearhead with a cross, indicating his title – the Duke of Trakai and Voluinia, and the inscription PEČAT on the other side of the coin.

Vytautas’ coins are 15–18 mm in diameter and 0.6–1 g and over in weight. The average weight of the coins could be about 0.8 g, fineness about 937.5 or 15 lots – Vytautas’ coins were struck of almost pure silver.

The coins under consideration change the previous dating of Vytautas’ coins bearing a spearhead with a cross and the inscription PEČAT. The beginning of their striking could be not earlier than 1393, they were struck until 1396.
