Vardan Mamikonian - 1625

Vardan Mamikonian (388/391-451) is Armenian Sparapet (supreme commander) headed the all-national fighting against the Persian Sassanid Empire.Vardan Mamikonian did a lot to restore the rights and privileges of the Armenian ministries and clergy, secure fortresses, unite and mobilize the military forces of those who supported him. Sharp controversies between Armenia and Persia led to the major battle that took place at the valley of Avarayr on May 26, 451. This is where Vardan Mamikonian died heroically. He has been canonized as “Holy Martyr of the Homeland”. Vardan Mamikonian has been portrayed a great deal in literature, sculpture, painting, music, theater. Many churches and monasteries built in Armenia and the Diaspora are devoted to him.First Republic of Armenia founded the Order of St. Vardan the Commander, in memory of the national hero Vardan Mamikonian, in 1920. Third Republic of Armenia issued the Order of Vardan Mamikonian in 2002.
