St. Sargis the Commander

The gold commemorative coin “St. Sargis the Commander” issued by the Central Bank of Armenia continues “The History of Armenian Culture” series of coins. According to a legend St. Sargis the Commander was martyred for Christian faith and thus deserved to be ranked among saints. As St. Sargis has been widely worshipped among Armenians churches dedicated to him have been built in many Armenian settlements. There is a widespread Armenian custom practiced on the night of last Saturday of February and dedicated to St. Sargis Fast, whereby plates full of roasted and sweetened flour are put onto the roofs of homes or in the yards in expectation that St. Sargis would leave imprint of the hoof or shoe of his horse on the pastry to symbolize wealth, success and happiness.
