Bagratouni Kingdom

The commemorative coins of the "Armenian Statehood" series depict several parts of the coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia. These parts relate to former dynasties and were used in their ancient coats of arms. This coin is based on the coat of arms of the Bagratouni dynasty. The Bagratouni royal dynasty (885-1045) is descended from the Bagratouni royal family. The founder of the dynasty is Ashot I. During his reign Armenia gained sovereignty and Ashot I was named "The King of Kings". Armenia and the major part of Transcaucasia were consolidated under the united power of the Bagratouni Kings. During the period of reign of the Bagratouni dynasty Armenia became a prominent state will high economic level. Architecture, culture, people's art, literature were rapidly developed, dozens of new towns were established. This development was especially noticeable in the town Ani, which became the capital of Armenia in 961.
