The coins are dedicated to the 140th birth anniversary of birth of Mykhailo Hrushevskyi (1866 – 1934), a leading personality in the national culture and statehood renaissance of Ukraine, literary critic, writer, sociologist, publicist, the author of a comprehensive study of the Ukrainian history. Obverse: 
On obverse of both coins  there are above -  the Small National Emblem of Ukraine, under which there is the inscription - НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК/ УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine), elements of the conventionalized ornament  are depicted diagonally, to the left - the coin face value: 5 ГРИВЕНЬ/ 2006 (5 Hryvnia/2006), designation of the metal Ag 925 and its weight in fineness and the logotype of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint.
Reverse: 
On the coin reverse there is a portrait of Mykhailo Hrushevsky, to the left there is the vertical inscription: МИХАЙЛО/ ГРУШЕВСЬКИЙ (Mykhailo Hrushevskyi), beneath there are the years of life: 1866/ 1934.
