Illia Mechnikov

The coin is dedicated to 160th anniversary of Illia Mechnikov (1845 – 1916), an outstanding, world-famous scientist and the Nobel Prize winner (1908). Mechnikov is one of the founders of evolution embryology, immunology and microbiology, who had discovered the phagocytosis phenomenon, had developed  the phagocytic  theory of immunity (1883). And even now ideas of the scientist have contributed to development of various fields of biology and medicine. In circulation since December 29, 2005.

Obverse: 
On the coin obverse to the right there is a depiction of a cell under a microscope - a conventionalized phagocytosis process; to the left there is 2005, the coin mintage year and the small State Emblem of Ukraine. Around the coin circumference there are inscriptions: НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (left), the Mint logo of the National Bank of Ukraine and ДВІ ГРИВНІ (beneath).
Reverse: 
On the coin reverse there is a portrait of Illia Mechnikov (displaced to the right) and 1845/1916, his years of life; left there is a semicircular inscription:  ІЛЛЯ МЕЧНИКОВ).
