Petrykivka Painting

Petrykivka painting or just “petrykivka” is a traditional Ukrainian decorative painting, which originates from Dnipropetrovsk oblast of Ukraine, Petrykivka village. Pertykivka painting traditionally decorated house walls and everyday household items, the earliest known samples of it dates back to the 17th century. At the same time it is also a modern art that is in process of developing and reforming.

The distinctive features of this folk art are the flower patterns, specific technique and traditionally white background (however present painters often work on black, green, red or blue background).

In 2012 Ministry of Culture of Ukraine recognized petrykivka painting as a part of intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine. Eventually it was also included to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on December 5, 2013 with definition "Petrykivka decorative painting as a phenomenon of the Ukrainian ornamental folk art". The renowned painting technique was turned into a brand, and “Petrykivka” logo was created. The logo now belongs to the craftsmen of Petrykivka village.
