The Codex

This silver commemorative coin issued by the Central Bank of Armenia is dedicated to 825 years of “The Codex” written by Mkhitar Gosh. “The Codex” is an Armenian memorial of the medieval law. It includes almost all aspects and institutes of the feudal law – criminal, civic, family, judicial and state laws. According to “The Codex” any action against the government, private property, person’s life and health, church and ideology prevailing at the time was recognized as a crime. “The Codex” provided for a dual system of punishment – bodily and religious. This work deserves to have been of progressive relevance since it put forward the principle of proportionality of crime and punishment. “The Codex” was applied both in Armenia and certain places of Armenian migration (Poland, Astrakhan, Georgia). Nearly 40 manuscripts of “The Codex”, including the oldest one, are kept in Matenadaran. Designed by Eduard Kurghinyan. Minted in the Mint of Finland LTD.
